Idling your vehicle could cost you

Posted: Updated:

Warming up your vehicle while it sits in your drive way could in fact be breaking the law.

Every driver who started their vehicle and then dashed back inside while it warmed up actually dodged a ticket. State law states that a person must stop their engine and remove the key. If not, they could be guilty of a misdemeanor and a could face a maximum fine of up to 500 dollars.

The law is in place to protect car owners from theft.

For those who use an auto start system, the law does not say anything about starting a vehicle without a key.

Police said that they do not usually ticket for this offense, but if your car is stolen, insurance usually will not pay the bill.
