The last time the 59News viewing area had a winter this cold was the winter of 2009 to 2010. So 59News is working for you, wondering if we can expect more dangerously cold temperatures this winter.

"We snuck a few mild days into December.  So that took the numbers up.  If winter was to stop today, we're not even in the top 10 coldest winters.  I know it's hard to believe." said StormTracker 59 Chief Meteorologist Spencer Adkins.

The StormTracker 59 team has been telling us what has been making this winter so cold.

"There are all of these different weather patterns across the globe, but they've all kind of conspired if you will, to drag the cold air, literally from Siberia, up across the North Pole and down into the eastern half of the United States," Adkins said.

Even Georgia and Alabama are experiencing what Adkins calls cross-polar flows.

Temperatures have been as cold as -9 at Beckley's airport in early January.  There have also been even -12 degree readings in parts of the area.  So what does the rest of winter have in store?

Spencer says we could see some cold days in February, some snow, and some mild days.

We asked Adkins if we should expect a warmer summer, since we had a colder winter.

"At this point no. We can't really say with much certainty. We can look at certain weather models.  It's not an automatic - just because you have a cold winter that you'll have a hot summer," said Adkins.

Some of the coldest temperatures in the state have been at Snowshoe where readings were -20.
