WHEELING, WV -

Wheeling Jesuit University has a Jesuit Novice on campus this spring.

Matthew Cortese, who will be living and working at WJU until June, was born and raised on Long Island.

He completed undergraduate work at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., where he majored in religious studies. 

After college, he spent a year as a Jesuit volunteer at Providence Hospice in Seattle. Before entering the Society of Jesus, he earned a master's degree in religion with a concentration in liturgy from Yale Divinity School in New Haven, Conn. 

Most recently, as a Jesuit Novice, Cortese served on the staff at the Spiritual Renewal Center in Syracuse, N.Y.

At WJU, Cortese is working at the Service for Social Action Center and the Appalachian Institute. In addition to facilitating volunteer and immersion trips, he'll be working on "Harvesting Health," an Institute program that promotes community gardening for seniors at a local building. He'll also be assisting with liturgical ministries in the campus ministry office.
