WASHINGTON, D.C. -

Renate Pore, director of health care policy for West Virginians for Affordable Health Care, has been awarded the Consumer Health Advocate of the Year Award by Families USA.

Families USA, the national organization for health care consumers, presented the honor during the group's annual in the nation's capital.

In recognizing Pore, the organization cited her "pivotal role in winning approval of the state's Medicaid expansion and the use of cutting-edge enrollment policies that makes West Virginia a model for the rest of the country."

West Virginia also ranks among the top states in its rate of eligible children insured through the Children's Health Insurance Program, according to Families USA.

Pore's career in health administration and policy has spanned more than 30 years and has included serving two West Virginia governors as director of the Health Care Planning Commission and the Governor's Cabinet on Children and Families.

She helped to create and establish the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy and served as a policy analyst on health care and early childhood issues.

Pore completed a master's degree in health policy and administration from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

She earned a master's degree in German and also holds bachelor's and doctor's degrees in history. She was a Fulbright scholar in Germany, where she did research on the social democratic women's movement.

The award has been presented every year since 1998.
