A Bluefield man was sentenced to 45 months in federal prison after admitting to stealing from the rescue squad in Virginia where he worked.

Thomas Franklin Carroll, 48, the former administrator of the Bluefield, Va. Rescue Squad, pleaded guilty recently in U.S. District Court in Abingdon, Va., to one count of bank fraud and one count of identity theft.

Carroll had served as administrator of the Tazwell County, Va., squad from 2005 to June 2011, said U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Heaphy. Over a three-year period Carroll admitted charging personal purchases to at least four of the squad's credit cards, then to cover up the fraud obtained a loan in the squad's name without permission in May 2011, depositing some of the proceeds into the squad's account.

Carroll also must complete four years of supervised release and ordered to make $204,490 in restitution, Heaphy said.

"(He) stole money from an organization tasked with providing needed assistance in medical emergencies," U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Heaphy said today. "He abused the trust placed in him by the Rescue Squad, and used their scarce resources for his personal gain. The sentence imposed today appropriately recognizes the seriousness of (his) crime."

The case was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service and Virginia State Police.
