UPDATE:

59News has learned the name of the 31-year-old Bluefield, VA man who was killed in a hit and run accident on Thursday morning.  Officials said that the victim was Patrick Eric Neal.

During a news conference on Friday afternoon that concerned the death of Mr Neal, officials with Mercer County Schools released the following statement:

"Mercer County Schools acknowledges that a traffic accident occurred yesterday (in the Bluewell area) that involved one of our buses. The district is saddened by this tragic accident and wishes to express our sympathy to the family of the accident victim.

The school bus was in route to pick up children for the day when the accident occurred.  There were no children on the bus at the time.

We are fully cooperating with the police in their investigation.  No further details will be released pending the conclusion of the investigation."


ORIGINAL STORY:

Deputies with the Mercer County Sheriff's Department have released more information about a body found in the Brushfork area on Thursday morning.

A 31-year-old Bluefield man was hit sometime between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Stoney Ridge Road in Mercer County.  Investigators said the man was walking along the road when he was hit by a "large commercial sized truck."  The body was found and reported at around 7:15 a.m.  The name of the victim is being withheld until family can be notified.

The investigation into what happened is still open.  Deputies said that the truck did not stop after hitting the man and did not report the incident.  Deputies do have a suspect in the case, but do not have a description at this time.
