BECKLEY -

Students in Raleigh County are making a huge impact on our environment.

Students in every school in Raleigh County have been recycling for more than a decade and each year the results are bigger and better.

The Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority announced the cumulative total from the years.
Last year the students collected almost 400 tons of recyclables.
In the past 12 years they said the students have collected almost 4,000 tons which is 8 million pounds.

"In the grand scheme of things when children remember the recycling program years after they've graduated then you know that it meant something to them as a child," said Sherrie Hunter, the Director of Education for the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority.

The program has grown from 11 schools to 37 schools in the county over the past 12 years.  It has also been a model for its sister program implemented in Fayette County.

Each year the school that collects the most gets a cash prize of $1,000 from the solid waste authority.
