UPDATE:

As of around 4:50 p.m. on Monday, March 10, Appalachian Power was reporting that power was completely restored to all customers in Mercer, McDowell, Tazewell and Wyoming Counties.

Appalachian Power is working to restore electrical service to thousands of customers who were left in the dark on Monday afternoon.

According to spokesperson, Phil Moye, the outage happened in a main transmission line.  At around 3 p.m. on Monday, March 10 crews were working at a station in the Minnix Mountain area when a breaker tripped in the transmission line.  Automatic safeties caused breakers at the New Hope and Switchback Stations to also trip.

Phil Moye said that power is expected to be back on by 5 p.m. Initially there were nearly 12,000 customers in Mercer County and more than 1,200 in Tazewell County.  As of 3:30 p.m. those numbers had gone down to more than 8,500 in Mercer and 325 in Tazewell.  However, McDowell County was then reporting 456 customers in the dark and Wyoming County was showing 114 customers without electricity.
