MORGANTOWN, WV -

Tara F. Hulsey, dean and professor at South Carolina's Charleston Southern University's College of Nursing and Allied Health, has been selected dean of the West Virginia University School of Nursing.

Betty Shelton has served the WVU School of Nursing as interim dean since late 2012.

Hulsey, also an adjunct faculty member in the Colleges of Medicine and Nursing at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, was selected by WVU Chancellor Christopher Colenda following a national search. She is expected to begin her new role Aug. 1.

Under Hulsey's leadership, the nursing program at Charleston Southern saw its enrollment triple. With 15 years of experience in a top academic health science center, Hulsey has assisted in building a strong research focus, developing and implementing doctoral and master's programs, and leading faculty development initiatives.

She earned her bachelor of science in nursing from Clemson University, her master of science in maternal/child nursing from the Medical University of South Carolina and her doctor of philosophy in nursing science from the University of South Carolina. Her specialty area is high-risk obstetrics.

Hulsey also is a certified nurse educator and teaches at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. She has developed nursing courses and graduate nursing programs for several universities and has served as a consultant to nursing programs in the United States and China.

Hulsey, a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, also served as a Robert Wood Johnson executive nurse fellow alumnus.

She was recently elected to the international board of directors of Sigma Theta Tau, the honor society for nursing.

She has held numerous leadership roles at the local, state, national and international levels, including as the chair of Sigma Theta Tau International's United Nations and Global Health Advisory Council and as a governor-appointed member of the South Carolina Board of Nursing.

In other news at the school, a library technical assistant at West Virginia University Libraries has won first prize in a literary magazine's writing contest.

Douglas Campbell recently won Ardor Literary Magazine's flash fiction contest with his short story, "Home to Laughter."

His tale appears in the current issue of the online publication.

Campbell, who began working for WVU in 1984 as a graduate teaching assistant in the English department, has been with WVU Libraries for nearly a quarter-century.
