The administrative director of the state supreme court has filed an "extraordinary complaint" against Kanawha County Magistrate Ward Harshbarger.

Harshbarger has presided over a domestic violence case involving Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney Mark Plants.

Administrator Steve Canterbury confirmed he filed the complaint Thursday, March 13 with the Judicial Investigation Committee, but said he cannot discuss information in it.

"The only thing I can say is a filed a complaint with the (committee) in connection with the Plants domestic violent matter," he said. "Now the Judicial Investigation Committee will investigate. They have 10 days to get a response back to the court."

He said the Supreme Court then will decide whether action is warranted. If an order is entered, only then would any details be made available.

"It's entirely up to the court," he said.
