WELCH -
UPDATE:

The West Virginia Department of Transportation announced that CR 1 which was blocked by a rockslide on Sunday has been reopened earlier than expected.  A contractor has been working all week to clear the road between U.S. Route 52 near Iaeger and Litwar.  According to Carrie Bly with the WVDOT, both lanes of the road were reopened at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9.

A contractor was hired to clean up the rockslide so that Division of Highways crews could continue to focus on their normal maintenance duties.  The WVDOT estimated the work to cost approximately $25,000.  The target date for finishing the work was Friday, April 11, but contractors were able to finish early.  Crews with the WVDOH patrolled the area on Wednesday night and Thursday morning to watch the hillside and make sure it remained stable.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Heavy Maintenance Crews with the West Virginia Department of Transportation are on the scene of a rockslide that has blocked State Route 1 in McDowell County.  The slide happened on Sunday, April 6 at Mile Marker .4 which is about a mile past the Iaeger Super Stop.

Officials with the WVDOT said that the rock in the road must be removed as well as another rock on the hillside.  After the initial assessment was completed, engineers determined that more work would be need ed to ensure the road was safe to travel.  At this time they estimate the road will be closed at least several days.  Officials with the WVDOT are consulting with contractors to complete the work needed.

People in the area that need to get around the slide are advised to travel through the Panther State Forest to State Route 80 and onto Coon Branch to get to Iaeger.  The McDowell County Board of Education has developed a plan for bus routes to ensure students are able to get to class.
