UPDATE:

The West Virginia Department of Transportation announced that temporary repairs are under way on Panther Creek Road, which is known in the local community as Bear Town Road.  According to the WVDOT a culvert collapsed causing a 16-inch diameter hole in the road. A steel plate was put down over the hole to allow heavy traffic like coal trucks and school buses to travel the route.  Officials with the DOH said that they the roadway is safe to travel by school buses.

Carrie Bly with the WVDOT said that when the rockslide on CR 1 is cleared from the roadway, DOH crews will begin permanent repairs to collapsed culvert.  The temporary repairs were completed around noon on Wednesday, April 9.

PREVIOUS STORY:

The West Virginia Division of Highways is working on a pair of problems in the western part of McDowell County on Wednesday, April 9.

On Sunday, April 6 a rockslide blocked CR 1 between Route 52 and Panther.  That forced the McDowell County Board of Education to re-route school bust traffic onto Bear Town Road through the Panther State Forest.  On Wednesday morning a culvert on Bear Town Road collapsed preventing heavy traffic such as school buses and coal trucks from traveling on the road.

McDowell County Superintendent Nelson Spencer and the Transportation Director went out to inspect the damage to the road on Wednesday morning.  Since this was the alternate route for school bus traffic, they are trying to determine what can be done about getting students to school. Members of the Panther Fire Department are at the location along with WVDOH crews.

The DOH said that lighter traffic such as passenger cars can still travel on Bear Town Road.
