    While many are safely celebrating Labor Day, State Troopers want to caution everyone about the dangers of drinking and driving.The West Virginia Department of Transportation says over the last 5 years in the Mountain State, almost 800 people have been killed in a drink driving crash just during Labor Day Weekend. West Virginia Tourism Commissioner Betty Carver announced April 24 she will retire from the position May 31.

Carver, a Belle native has served as commissioner, bureau chief, deputy commissioner and director of community relations for the division of tourism during her time in the office.

“It has truly been an honor to serve our state for 37 magnificent years,” Carver said in a news release. “My time at Tourism has been especially rewarding for me personally — and professionally.

“We’ve worked hard for many years and I believe we have succeeded in showing folks from around the globe: Wild and Wonderful West Virginia.”

Carver also spent time as director of scheduling and advance for Gov. Gaston Caperton and as special assistant to the attorney general and appointments coordinator for Gov. Jay Rockefeller.

“Betty has dedicated nearly 40 years to public service in the Mountain State, and for the past 11 years she has led efforts to show the world the many things that make our state great,” Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said in a news release. “In fact, under her leadership, travel and tourism revenue topped $5 billion in 2012, contributing $5.1 billion to West Virginia’s economy — the first time in the state’s history.”
