David Bowyer has been selected chairman of the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy.

Bowyer’s responsibilities include development and oversight of budget, hiring and mentorship of new faculty, provision of leadership to existing faculty and staff, clinical programs, oversight of experiential education and residency programs.

For the past nine years Bowyer has served as Director of Experiential Education at University of Charleston School of Pharmacy.

During this time he established advanced practice experiences, early practice experiences and service learning for classes of 80 students each year and developed all policies and procedures for the program.

He earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy. He has worked in a variety of practice settings during his career, including hospital and community pharmacy.

He has also provided services as a consultant pharmacist in long-term care settings.

He has served as president of the West Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists and has served two terms as voting delegate to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. He also serves on the board of directors of the West Virginia Rural Health Association.

He organized and has served as the coordinator of the Alliance for Pharmacist Care since its founding.

The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy enrolled its first students in 2006 and received full accreditation when the first class graduated in 2010. Each year, the school educates more than 300 student pharmacists.
