Three West Virginia schools have just been honored, and one of those schools is in our area.

Maxwell Hill Elementary is now named a "School of Excellence" for the 2014-2015 school year. Schools of excellence are selected based on several criteria, including a rigorous and challenging curriculum, documented student achievement, implemented advanced and innovated programs, leadership and much more.

This is a title each school will hold for the next 5 years.

Maxwell Hill Elementary School Principal, Amanda Richmond told 59News excellence is a collaborative effort.

"We are very proud at Maxwell Hill of our students, our staff and of our parents and family members. It truly takes the whole community working together for our school to be successful as well as for our students to be successful," Richmond said.

George Washington Elementary School in Putnam County and Brandywine Elementary School in Pendleton County were the other two schools honored with this title.

The schools will be recognized with a reception and banquet on October 9th at the Clay Center in Charleston.
