Southern West Virginia King's Warriors prepare for season opener, Chess tournament in Mercer county

Posted: Updated:
The Southern West Virginia King's Warriors have their season opener Friday.
The Warriors are part of the Premier Developmental League, which is North America's top developmental amateur league.
The team consists mostly of former and current collegiate soccer players with the exception of one player still in high school.
They also have a very diverse roster, featuring players from 11 different countries.
Last year home games were in Beckley but this year they are excited to play at the East River Soccer Complex in Bluefield.
The Warriors host the South Carolina Bantams Friday in Bluefield.  Game starts at 7pm.

It was the first annual chess tournament in the county for middle school students.
The top players from PikeView, Princeton and Bluefield all gathered Wednesday for a 16 person bracket-style playoff of the best of the best.
The preparation for this tournament included practices, caches, dedication and strategies.
While the students get very competitive, they enjoy meeting others from different schools during their matches and their coaches are happy to give them an alternative after school activity.
"They've been so excited, they've been practices all year, staying after school on Wednesdays. They have really looked forward to coming and it's been great.  They've been around other kids who like the same thing, chess," said PikeView's coach Brenda Harshbarger.
"Not all kids are athletic and want to play sports, even though some of the kids on the chess team are. They need more things to do like this, all kids do.  Some kids are into music, not all kids are into sports, some kids just want to play chess," added Jessica Morgan, who coaches Bluefield and Princeton.
It was a one day tournament that wrapped up Wednesday and the coaches were happy with the turnout.
