Davis and Elkins College rolls out long list of summer camp options

Davis & Elkins College has opportunities for young athletes of all ages and skill levels at summer camps, scheduled to start June 8.

The D&E soccer program will host the summer's first camp June 8-12. The half-day camp is for boys and girls, ages 6-12, and runs from 9 a.m.-noon each day. Participants will be shown the fundamentals of soccer dribbling, passing, shooting and heading in a role play, as well as a concentration game atmosphere. Davis & Elkins College Head Women’s Soccer Coach Gene Smith will serve as camp director and be assisted by college, high school and youth coaches.

A full-day youth soccer camp will run July 27-31. Open to boys and girls ages 6-12, the camp offers the fundamentals of soccer dribbling, passing, shooting and heading in a role play, as well as a concentration game atmosphere. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include time at the pool and lunch. A residential co-ed middle school soccer camp will be offered July 21-24 with both residential and commuter options for players looking for a more challenging level of instruction. The camp will offer individual skill development sessions and application of skills in group tactics.

Also scheduled this summer is the All-Sports Camp, which runs June 16-19 and offers athletes ages 6-18 the opportunity to learn a variety of sports from the D&E coaching staff. Campers will nine choices for each of the eight sessions, but cannot repeat the same sport twice in one day. Sports covered in the camp are: baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming, volleyball, basketball, golf, softball and tennis. Davis & Elkins College Athletic Director Ronnie Palmer will serve as camp director with the coaching staff, which will include Palmer and D&E coaches Jason Asbell, Chris Cottrell, Will Shaw, Ali Forsythe, Aron Bassoff, Gene Smith, Kimberly Stiles, Otis Cutshaw and Ashley Pappas. Participants are asked to bring a lunch and water bottle.

Strength and Conditioning coach Aaron Friedman will host a month-long camp, June 16-July 11, for high school athletes and teams. Each workout will be sport-specific, with a focus on strength training, conditioning, core training, agility and speed. Good nutrition also will be covered during the camp.

The men's basketball program will conduct a high school team camp June 20-22, focusing on providing players with a solid foundation of basketball skills and knowledge with instruction from D&E Head Men’s Basketball Coach Chris Cottrell and the D&E coaching basketball staff. Each team is guaranteed five games. The team camp will be followed up by a pair of individual camps June 23-27 and July 14-17. The two co-ed camps are for ages kindergarten through rising high school seniors. Players will be grouped by age and basketball playing ability. A half-day camp for players in grades kindergarten through fourth will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. A full-day camp for players in grades five through 12 will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

G-MAC Coach of the Year Otis Cutshaw will also host a pair of tennis camps. The Advanced Camp for ages 12 to 18 will run July 21-25, while the Beginner Camp for ages 5 to 11 will be held August 4-8. During the Advanced Camp, hitting and playing strategies will be a focal point of daily instruction. The camp takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. For the Beginner Camp, Cutshaw uses the 10 and Under Quickstart Tennis method as his primary teaching technique. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon each day. 

The final camp of the year will be the Men's Basketball Elite Camp, which is slated for 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. August 9. Open to rising high school juniors and seniors, the camp offers individual instruction from the D&E coaching staff focusing on fundamentals and team play, and offensive drills and defensive drills.
