STATE OF EMERGENCY: McDowell County Commission declares emergency in connection with flooding problems

    While many are safely celebrating Labor Day, State Troopers want to caution everyone about the dangers of drinking and driving.The West Virginia Department of Transportation says over the last 5 years in the Mountain State, almost 800 people have been killed in a drink driving crash just during Labor Day Weekend. Emergency dispatchers in McDowell County have said that there is flooding has occurred overnight in the Bull Creek/Panther area on Thursday morning, June 5.   Several bridges have reportedly been washed away in that area.  Water was seen running up into houses and along the road through 3 a.m.

Just before noon on Thursday, the county commission declared a state of emergency in the county as a result of the flooding overnight.  That allows the county access to resources from relief agencies like the American Red Cross.

Residents are advised to use caution when out on the road.  Officials say that you should never cross running water when you can not see the roadway.  A Flash Flood Warning was issued overnight as the flooding occurred for McDowell County and neighboring Tazewell County had Flash Flood Warnings as well.
