By a vote of 78-17 June 5, the U.S. Senate confirmed Hinton, WV native Sylvia Mathews Burwell as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Burwell currently serves as director of the White House Office of Management and Budget. She was confirmed for that position in April 2013.

She worked on President Bill Cilnton's budget in the 1990s and spent time at both the Treasury Department and OMB, where she served as deputy director.

Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., issued statements moments after Burwell’s confirmation.

“Sylvia is a shining star and a devoted public servant who has earned the respect of both Democrats and Republicans, and the bipartisan support she received since the President announced her nomination only further reflects how highly regarded she is across the aisle,” Rockefeller said.  “As someone who has known Sylvia both professionally and personally throughout her life, I firmly believe Sylvia is the right person for this critically important position that impacts the health and well being of every American.”

Manchin said Burwell’s West Virginia roots and her professional experience have helped “mold her aptitude to work in a bipartisan way, combat tough problems and get things done.”

“Sylvia has served her country admirably, and I have every confidence she will continue to serve all Americans admirably for years to come.”
