SUMMERS COUNTY -
Summers County is calling on the WVU School of Public Health for help on tackling serious issues in southern West Virginia.

Dr. David Parker, Associate Professor of Epidemiology at WVU, was in Hinton Friday meeting with community leaders, clinics and a local hospital to find the underlying problem with drugs and the rising number of infectious diseases.

He said, "The School of Public Health is here to look at multiple conditions and diseases, specifically hepatitis, drug use and drug overdoses."

Dr. Parker said West Virginia ranks the highest in the country for Hepatitis B and Summers County is in the top three counties in the state with highest cases of viral hepatitis.

Parker is working with the WV Bureau of Public Health to apply for grants through the Center for Disease Control that will benefit the area by providing training to local physicians on how to treat viral hepatitis. He also says another grant is in the works that will specifically help Summers County, which is through the WVU Injury Control and Research Center to specifically look at risk behaviors related with drug use in Summers County.
