Hoops, Drills and Life Skills camp teaches more than basketball in Bluefield

Posted: Updated:
Over one hundred kids from five different states enjoyed their lunch at the Bluefield City Auditorium today during the annual Hoops, Drills and Life Skills basketball camp.
"Not only is it a basketball camp, but it teaches these kids very responsible things that can help them in a lifetime such as respect, character education and life skills," said Bluefield basketball coach Buster Large.
The camp is sponsored by CASE West Virginia, and while it's focused around basketball, the messages the coaches send go beyond the hardwood.
"The kids get a lunch and then we go into a guest speaker and we try to do some sort of prevention message daily and then get in there and get instruction and give the kids a chance to play and be active," said CASE Program Director Jim Pettus.
The campers answered trivia questions by NCAA official Mike Eades, and also got instruction by Bluefield College men's basketball coach Richard Morgan.
Morgan explained to them the steps to warming up, "when you go into the gym you have to stretch, you have to do ball handling, you got to work on your short game, free throws, layups, those things and then you make your way out to the three."
Once they got some tips on how to play they were let loose to do some drills.
The camp's last day is Thursday and will be capped off by a varsity scrimmage between Bluefield and Greater Beckley Christian that the campers are able to watch.
