Public Workers Union announces informational picket in Beckley

Posted: Updated:
The union that supports workers for the West Virginia Division of Highways is going to picket over the use of non-emergency mandatory overtime.

Members of the UE Local 170, West Virginia Public Workers Union will be holding an informational picket at 5:30 p.m.  They will be set up near the entrance of the Division of Highways garage located at 4304 Robert C. Byrd Drive in Beckley.

According to a release from the union, the Raleigh County DOH has recently begun requiring road crews to work weekends and additional hours for non-emergency road maintenance.  The release goes on to say that the DOH is using disciplinary action against employees who are not able to put in more than 40-hours a week.

Highway workers are subject to mandatory overtime for emergency conditions, such as clearing roads of snow and ice.  Officials with the West Virginia Department of Transportation said that workers right now are not subject to mandatory overtime.  They did say that there was some overtime required earlier in the year to deal with the pothole problems caused by the difficult winter, but the WVDOT has since moved away from that as the contract paving season got under way.
