The West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses announced that they approved the University of Charleston in Beckley to initiate an Associate Degree in Nursing.

A release from the University of Charleston said that the program was a result of a true community partnership.  Representatives from Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital and the Beckley Chamber of Commerce were involved in the process of getting the program at UC-Beckley.

"This is an exciting day for UC," said University of Charleston President, Ed Welch. "My thanks and gratitude go to hospital administrators and business leaders in Beckley who have worked closely with the University of Charleston to bring this much-needed program to interested students in southern West Virginia."

The program is great towards working adults.  It is offered on alternate weekends and can be completed in 18 consecutive months.  The ADN program is expected to launch during the fall semester.  The class limit is 15 students who must apply for the ADN program after being accepted to the University of Charleston.

The CEO of Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, Rocco Massey, said that the demand for healthcare services is continuing increase.

"We take care of 275,000 people across seven counties," said Massey.  "One thing is for sure, we have to have nurses in order to do that."

The program will be a combination of online and face-to-face learning, laboratory work and clinical work in area hospitals.  Admission requirements can be found at www.ucwv.edu/admissions.
