Several state laws will take effect July 1, including the law passed to give teachers and school service personnel an across-the-board $1,000 pay raise.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin promised in his State of the State address school teachers, bus drivers and custodians would see a 2 percent increase in their salaries.

“Therefore, I commit to funding a 2 percent pay raise for all teachers and school service personnel who invest in our children every day," Tomblin said in his speech. "I’m also asking for a modest pay increase for our state employees – who have been asked to do more with less."

The West Virginia Legislature then passed Senate Bill 391 the $1,000 across-the-board raise on March 8, the final day of the regular legislative session.

Another law that takes effect allows full-time and part-time salaried and hourly state workers to be paid every two weeks instead of twice a month.

State employees would previously be forced to go without a pay check on a three-day weekend. The change will get employees 26 paychecks a year instead of 24, but workers will continue to be paid the same amount.

Other bills that take effect July 1:

SB 322 - Requiring the state pay employees every 2 weeks

SB 376 - Construction workers get OSHA certified

SB 383 - Self-financed mortgage requirements

SB 391 - Teacher, school service personnel pay raise

SB 414 - Redirecting nonprobate appraisement filings

SB 458 - Dedicating certain circuit court fees to low-income persons who need legal services

HB 4012 - Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts

HB 4290 - Revising regulatory structure of money transmitters and other entities
