    Delegate A. Benton "Ben" Chafin was elected to the Senate of Virginia, Tuesday. Chafin secured a Republican majority in the General Assembly upper chamber. Chafin will serve and represent the 38th District, succeeding former Senator Phil Puckett who resigned in June. Chafin defeated Democrat Mike Hymes and Independent Rick Mullins. Polls closed at 7 PM on Tuesday night.

Two professors have been granted tenure at West Virginia Wesleyan College, while another has won a promotion.

Newly tenured are Dr. Gregory Bradley-Popovich and Tammy Samples.

Bradley-Popovich completed a bachelor’s degree in biology at Fairmont State University as well as dual master’s degrees in exercise physiology and human nutrition from West Virginia University.

His doctor of physical therapy degree was awarded with honors from Creighton University in Nebraska. He has published articles on a variety of topics, especially those related to strength training, dietary supplements and spinal dysfunction.

He is a freelance fitness writer, nutrition consultant and practicing physical therapist. He joined West Virginia Wesleyan as an assistant professor of exercise science and athletic training and director of the applied health and human performance laboratory in fall of 2008.

Samples is an associate professor of education at Wesleyan. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from West Virginia University, dual master’s degrees in reading and leadership from Marshall University, and a doctoral degree from West Virginia University in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis on reading.

She has taught in the Upshur County school system for 16 years and has served on the Upshur County Board of Education for two years. At Wesleyan, she is responsible for courses that primarily deal with literacy and reading on both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Susan Leight is now a full professor and the school’s director of its School of Nursing.

She holds a doctorate in educational psychology and a master of science in nursing degree from WVU. Her bachelor in nursing degree is from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

She also completed a three-year, post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research interests include the early detection of breast cancer, cultural competence in health care providers, rural vulnerability and the use of narrative pedagogy in academic settings.

Leight holds two patents for her work on a simulated breast model that has since been licensed to industry. She also holds national certification as an adult and family nurse practitioner.
