West Virginians who use the E-ZPass to electronically pay tolls on turnpikes and toll roads should be wary of emails suggesting they have unpaid fees, Attorney General Patrick Morrisey reports.

Morrisey said they’ve had reports of a phishing scam targeting E-ZPass customers: Scammers are emailing what appears to be a message from the company claiming they owe unpaid tolls and asks them to click on a link to get more information and pay the fees. The email, however, is not legitimate..

“This is unfortunately just another attempt for scammers to try and steal money from honest West Virginians by scaring them into paying an unpaid toll,” Morrisey said. “During the summer months many West Virginians will be on vacation or out traveling so they should be aware of this scam if they are using the E-ZPass to quickly pay tolls while on the road.”

If you receive a suspicious E-ZPass email, Morrisey advises deleting it. He said consumers should not reply to the email or click on the link.

“Our Office wants West Virginians to remain safe while traveling this summer and when checking their email inboxes,” he said.

For information or if you believe you have been a victim of a scam, Morrisey advises calling the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at (800) 368-8808.
