Independence football preview: Vicars vies for better season

Posted: Updated:
It's the first day teams can practice in pads and while they can't have full contact yet, Independence High School is ready to.

"We look like football players so we're really excited for Tuesday when we finally get to hit each other and Saturday when we can scrimmage another team," said senior Austin Parrish.

Last year head coach Chris Vicars took over the program with less than two weeks before the first game.  With only a two win season, he thinks having them for a full year will make a difference, and the players agree.

"They know what to expect, I know what to expect and it's been much smoother to start the season this year," Vicars explained.

With 14 seniors graduated from last year's squad, the team is young, but they are ambitious and dedicated.

"We at least want to go 7 and 3, we want to make playoffs, we had a bad year last year but I think we're going to improve a lot.  We have a hard work attitude and I think we'll achieve what we want," said senior Dustin Justice.

Every coaches motto is to take it week by week, but naturally, the players look forward to rivalries like Liberty and Shady Spring.

Independence's first game will be August 29th at home against Midland Trail.
