Troopers with the West Virginia State Police are investigating a case where a Beckley man in his thirties was allegedly sending sexual messages and pictures to a 14-year-old girl. John Thomas Buchanan, Jr., 37, of Beckley was arrested on Monday, May 4, 2015 and charged with Use of Obscene Matter with Intent to Seduce a Minor.
The victim’s mother contacted troopers on March 29, 2015 stating that her daughter had been communicating with at least two men in their 30’s on Facebook. Investigators interviewed the victim who told them that Buchanan was talking with her about sexual things on the social media site. According to the criminal complaint, Buchanan admitted during an interview April 30 to sending sexual messages to the victim using Facebook. He also admitted to posing as his wife in an effort to “gain the trust” of the victim.
In a second interview with Buchanan on the day of his arrest, he admitted that he had sent sexual pictures to the victim. He apparently also told police that he suffered from sexual addiction and was attracted to young, underage girls.
Both the victim and Buchanan said that there had never been any physical relationship between the them. He was arraigned in front of Raleigh County Magistrate Greg Tanner. Buchanan is being held in the Southern Regional Jail on a $50,000 bond.
