Eight months in the making. After a long recruiting process, seven new officers are added to the force.
Officer Nick Walters was sworn in several weeks ago. Tuesday night, the other six were introduced. Alex McGhee, Charlene Diggs, Jim McNeely, Logan Christian, and Naomi Cook.
“I look forward to being able to help, being able to help make a difference in somebodies life, if I can impact one person every day I’ll feel good about myself,” Alex McGhee said.
History was also made in this recruiting class. Charlene Diggs is the first minority female officer in the Beckley Police Departments history.
“Being the first minority female, it’s it’s big, that not many minorities come out to be a police officer and I was probably not the first to try, but the first to succeed it’s a big deal,” Diggs said.
Diggs, the Beckley native, welcomes the opportunity to serve the community that’s near and dear to her heart.
“And so for somebody to do something about it, they have to be from it, live it, live experience from it and so I do feel like it would be a good opportunity for me to do that,” she said.
Three of the new hires will go to the West Virginia State Police Academy in June, the other three will go in August.
