One child is dead, another in critical condition after an accident on Sunday, Dec. 11 in Beckley.
It happened at the intersection of Patch Street and Plumley Avenue. The children, aged 10 and 8-years-old, were traveling on a dirt bike on Plumley Avenue.
A car, driven by a 21-year-old woman, was on the same road, going through the intersection. Police said the dirt bike went through, not stopping at the stop sign, and hit the car.
Neither child wore a helmet and were not legally permitted to be driving a motorcycle on a public roadway.
“We have to be responsible for our kids, and make sure they wear these helmets,” Lt. Jason McDaniel of Beckley Police Department said. “Make sure they aren’t riding the dirt bikes on the main roads. These things are made for off road activities, not main road activities.”
Both children were taken to the hospital, where the 10-year-old died. The 8-year-old is in critical condition.
No charges or violations are expected to be filed against the driver of the car.
