The 45th Annual Chick Fila YMCA Biddy Buddy All Star Tournament is back on the hardwood throughout the city of Beckley.
Nearly 60 teams flock to the Y, Woodrow Wilson High, and Appalachian Bible College to compete. In an effort to meet this years demand the gym at Memorial Baptist Church was also added.Jason Logan is the tournament director.
“We have 56 total teams you’re looking at probably ten kids per team so your close to right around 600 kids,” he said.
Many of the players said the tournament provides a great experience and an opportunity for them to keep their A-Game up to date and in Check. Israel Canterburry and his team are visiting the area from Charleston.
“It just helps us out because there’s some good competition it just helps us really,” he said.
Aside from the competition the tournament also serves as a family tradition for many of those who are involved. “These kids that play in this tournament will have lasting memories of the friendship that they have with their team mates and other teams we have coaches that are coming back now coaching their sons who have played in this tournament,” Logan said.
Andy Reed is an assistant coach who is also from Charleston. “My brother won two UAA National Championships when he was younger I also played we finished high in the national tournament when I was playing also so it’s just Kinda been in our family a lot of the kids here their father also played AAU so we keep the tradition up, Reed said.
Aside from the usual bragging rights winners of this weeks competition are sent home with gold trophies and medals for their participation.
