Community and economic director for the city of Bluefield Jim spencer thinks this is a result of the war on coal.
“For many years there’s been a push from the federal government to get away from burning coal as a fuel that’s impacted a lot of different sectors not just the railroad. But it’s impacted direct mining jobs impacted manufacturing jobs. That’s why we’re working real hard to try and diversity our local economy look at create start up businesses as to sort of replace those jobs.”
Officials with the company said the consolidation is part of the company’s ongoing drive to enhance operating efficiencies and support long term growth.
