Deadline to register looms for WV flood victims

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced the deadline to apply for disaster assistance is just three weeks away. The last day to apply is Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016.  Individual disaster grants are available for homeowners and renters who qualify in 12 counties.  The effected counties are Clay, Fayette, Greenbrier, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Monroe, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Roane, Summers and Webster.

Applications can be filed at a Disaster Recovery Center.  The closest can be found by calling 800-621-3362 or going online to www.fema.gov/drc.  Registration can also be done by calling 800-621-3362 or going online to www.DisasterAssistance.gov.  Two disaster recovery centers are set to close on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016.  The locations in Monroe County at Alderson Senior Center and Nicholas County at Birch River Elementary School will shut their doors at 6 p.m.

FEMA grants do not have to be repaid.  Assistance from the agency is nontaxable and will not affect eligibility for Social Security, Medicaid or other federal benefits.
