Demolition work began at Big Creek High School in McDowell County on Thursday July 30, 2015. The school was closed in 2010. School administrators said the school was a safety hazard. A playground will be built in it’s place for student’s at Southside K-8 School. Big Creek went up in flames on July 30, 2015. Workers on site said the fire has prolonged the demolition process.
Project Manager Anthony Jordan said, “In three weeks time from start to finish, we would have been in and of here. Because of the fire, we remediated what we could remediate. We’re tearing down the new section of the building. The rest of it is going have to be hand picked.”
Some residents in War said they are sad to see the school go.
Gloria Davis said, “I hate to see it go and everything because my kids graduated from there and everything and it was just like a big thing for us.”
59News spoke to one woman who graduated from Big Creek.
Iris Beavers said, “I know it’s time for it to be torn down because the Southside School does need a place for the children to play. I don’t think you can get rid of the memories. Memories will be there for all of us forever because you know once an owl, always an owl.
The cause of the fire at Big Creek is still under investigation. If you remember, Big Creek gained national attention from the movie October Sky. The movie was about the true story of Homer Hickam and the Rocket Boys of McDowell County. They all went to Big Creek.
