A Raleigh County Sheriff’s Deputy was arrested on a DUI charge on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016 after wrecking his cruiser in Shady Spring.  Roger Dale Richmond, Jr. reported that he had been in an accident at around 1:30 a.m..  Investigators said the accident appeared to have happened across from the Liberty gas station in Shady Spring.  There were fresh ruts in the ditch there and dirt in the roadway.

Sgt. Richmond was found in the parking lot of Shady Spring Middle School about 1½ miles away from where the accident happened.  The patrol car was damaged and the driver’s side tire was completely missing.  There were indications in the cruiser that Richmond may have been using drugs.  He was taken to Raleigh General Hospital.  An investigation was conducted and Sgt. Richmond was charged with DUI  and Possession of a Schedule IV Controlled Substance.

“While we recognize that drug addiction reaches all groups and businesses, it is extremely important to understand that no one is above the law and that the Sheriff’s Office will never tolerate any form of criminal action or inappropriate behavior and this incident will remain completely transparent for the general public to see,” said Sheriff Steve Tanner.  “This office is deeply saddened by the action of the former deputy, but will take all necessary measure to maintain and keep the trust of the public.”

Richmond resigned from the Sheriff’s Office as a result of the investigation.  He was arraigned in front of Magistrate Humphries and released on a $2,500 bond.
