Looking directly at the sun during the eclipse could cause serious eye damage- that’s why health officials stress the importance of special eclipse glasses.

Gazing at the sun can cause damage at the retina which may actually cause the retina to have a scar with permanent loss of visual acuity and loss of field of vision such as a blind spot,” Dr. Taoufik Sadat said.

Dr. Taoufik goes on to say you may not know you have damage to your eyes until you get checked by an eye doctor. He says there are a number of tests that doctors can use to inspect and diagnose eye damage.
