The YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Sports Complex in Beckley is soccer central.  Eight fields host teams from youth league up to the collegiate level.  Soon, the Y’s main field, Paul Cline Stadium, is about to get a major renovation.

“We decided that probably the best solution is for us to go with a synthetic surface,” said YMCA of Southern West Virginia CEO Jay Rist.

Not just any synthetic surface, FieldTurf, a premier brand of artificial turf used in sports stadiums across the county, including CenturyLink Field, Gillette Stadium and a number of soccer facilities.

“They do everything from the English Premier Leagues to the MLS to universities and clubs.”

Paul Cline Stadium is home of the Flying Eagles boys and girls soccer teams, but the renovation will benefit more than just Woodrow Wilson.

“The surrounding schools will also be using it.  For this county, what it’s going to bring in, it’s going to be unbelievable,” said Woodrow’s boys soccer coach Rockey Powell.

A field face-lift like this doesn’t come cheap, to renovate one field alone cost around $1 million.

The Cline Family Foundation is tripling the amount the YMCA raises toward the project.  An anonymous donor donated $250,000 to secure the renovation.

“The donors desire is for the Y to continue to raise the funds, raise $250,000 as well, so that we can set that aside for the future operation and maintenance of the complex that does so much for our children,” said Rist.

The YMCA is $60,000 short or reaching their goal, but with the help from the community and their donors he project is moving along.

Soccer enthusiasts want to keep Beckley the soccer home for the state.

“You look at football, you think Wheeling, you look at baseball, you think Charleston, you look at soccer you think of Beckley,” Powell added.

The fundraiser for the project runs until April 30, 2015.  Any donation is appreciated, checks can be made out to the YMCA of Southern WV and can be dropped off or mailed to 121 E. Main St. Beckley, WV 25801.  Donations after the deadline will be accepted.
