WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) – A judge has appointed an attorney for a former West Virginia man facing a fourth trial in the murder of a teenage clerk at a southwestern Pennsylvania dry cleaner almost four decades ago.

The Washington County judge also scheduled a status conference next month to discuss how to proceed in the case of William “Tippy” Wallace.

Wallace is already serving a life sentence in the August 1979 shooting death of 63-year-old Carl Luisi Sr., who owned the Canonsburg business, but faces retrial in the murder of 15-year-old Tina Spalla.

Wallace’s first trial ended in a hung jury in 1980. He was convicted of both murders in 1981 and again in 1985 after an appeal, but a federal judge ordered a retrial in Spalla’s death
