A man accused in a double murder in North Carolina and shooting two Lewisburg Police Officers on New Year’s Day 2015 commits suicide in prison, according to CBS Affiliate WRAL. Edward Campbell was the father of a criminal duo with his son Eric.
The father-son pair were accused of murdering a Granville County, North Carolina couple and shooting Lewisburg Police Officers Nicholas Sams and Jeremy Dove on January 1, 2015.
Sams and Dove were injured in the shooting.
WRAL reported correctional officers found Campbell unresponsive in his cell at Raleigh’s Central Prison at 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday March 10, 2015. Authorities said Campbell died after trying to hang himself.
Prison medical staff treated Campbell and later transported him to a hospital where he later died.
Campbell and his 21-year-old son Eric face 10 charges including two counts of First-Degree Murder, and one count each of First-Degree Burglary, Second-Degree Arson, and Identity Theft in the deaths of Jerome Faulkner, 73, and his wife, Dora Faulkner, 62.
The Campbells were arrested in Greenbrier County after a shootout with police.
North Carolina authorities believe the Faulkners were random targets.
