Man Arrested in McDowell County For Throwing Contraband Over Federal Prison Gate


A man was arrested in McDowell County on felony charges on the night of September 3, 2016.

Gregory Williams, a Maryland resident, was taken into custody on Federal Street in Welch, next to the Federal Correctional Institution Saturday around 11:30 p.m. He is accused of throwing contraband over the perimeter fence of the prison. 

Troopers say they found Williams had several camouflaged packages on him before throwing them over the fence. Williams is charged with attempt to commit a felony, conspiracy to commit a felony, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. He was placed in the McDowell County Holding Unit.
