New Haven Christmas Project hosts Toy Drive in Fayette County

The New Haven Christmas Project was hard at work this morning helping families in Fayette County prepare for Christmas. 59 News was at their toy drive and spoke with some of the volunteers about their efforts.

Lisa Anderson came all the way from North Carolina to volunteer during Saturday’s toy drive. “This is a wonderful, wonderful project. I had learned about it several years ago and wanted to get involved. Having grown up here I was so excited to come back,” said Anderson, North Carolina Baptist Men Volunteer.

Anderson was once a student at Midland Trail High School. She says today is especially meaningful for her because now she can give back to a community who once helped her family.

“Having people helped me, they helped my family when I was growing up. That was such a wonderful experience to know that people loved me enough to do that,” Anderson added.

She was one of the dozens of volunteers helping hand out Christmas gifts, health kits and backpacks filled with food, toys and other items. In fact, many of the classrooms at the school were filled with donated items for both children and their parents.

All of the items sent home today were either given by generous donors or purchased through money given to the New Haven Christmas Project. “That’s what we’re here for, we’re here to help. God put this on our hearts way back when and we just decided that it’s something that we wanted to do. Without the help of the community, the businesses, the churches, individuals, that’s how this runs,” said Susan Lewis, New Haven Christmas Project Director.

Even the kids were able to pick out gifts they wanted to give their Mom and Dad. “We also have a parent room where the kids, together can shop for Mom and Dad so that way the kids can feel like they’re doing something for Christmas as well, it’s not just about them, Christmas is about the family,” Lewis added.

Even though their toy drive ended today at 3:00pm, the New Haven Christmas Project will be available to help families in need all the way through Christmas. If you would like to get in touch with the New Haven Christmas Project you can call them at 304-256-2167.
