Nexstar Broadcasting announced on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015 that it has entered into an agreement to purchase West Virginia Media Holdings, the company that owns WVNS-TV and three other network-affiliated television stations in West Virginia. The other stations are: WOWK in Charleston, WBOY in Clarksburg and WTRF in Wheeling.
Nexstar will begin operating the stations in December. The planned acquisition will require approval from the Federal Communications Commission and will be completed by December 2016. Nexstar currently owns WHAG-TV in Hagerstown.
West Virginia Media Holding Chief Executive Officer Bray Cary said the new network of stations will strengthen and broaden West Virginia coverage by adding the fast growing region of the state, the Eastern Panhandle. With the purchase of the West Virginia television stations, Nexstar will own, operate and program 115 television stations serving 62 markets in 25 states.
The purchase does not include The State Journal newspaper, which covers government, business and legislative issues in West Virginia.
