Program launched to help laid off coal miners

On Friday, May 29, 2015, U.S. Representative Evan Jenkins (R-WV)  unveiled the Coal Miners Assistance Program, which will help miners facing layoffs from West Virginia coal mines.

The program includes information on state and federal resources and benefits to help miners and their families quickly respond to layoff announcements. A PDF of the Coal Miners Assistance Program informational packet is available here. Constituents needing further assistance are asked to call the congressman’s offices in Huntington at (304) 522-2201 or Beckley at (304) 250-6177.

“West Virginia coal miners and their families are facing difficult times. Due to the Obama administration’s policies and economic factors, the demand for West Virginia coal is falling. Thousands of West Virginia coal miners have already been laid off, and thousands more families worry about their futures,” Rep. Jenkins said.

“Miners facing layoffs need to be able to get back on their feet. My Coal Miners Assistance Program will help provide them with the information and tools they can use to explore all of their options and act quickly. My offices are also ready to help any miner – or any district resident – who has lost his or her job and needs assistance.

“As a member of Congress, I am proud to fight for policies that will strengthen and promote West Virginia jobs and West Virginia energy. I’ll continue fighting for our families in Washington and stand ready to help in any way that I can.”
