A prominent figure in Southern West Virginia is being mourned.

Mel Hancock was a leader with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Raleigh County.

Hancock passed away Thursday afternoon at Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Hancock was well known in the city of Beckley. Over the years he worked with the YMCA of Southern West Virginia and the Friends of Coal Auto Fair.

“Mel filled so many roles in this community, he’s just been a rock, since his days, back in the 60’s when he was at the YMCA,” Richard Jarrell, longtime friend of Hancock, said. “Then he was at Beckley College, Mountain State University, and fundraising and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.”

Hancock has donated his body to the Marshall University’s School of Medicine in Huntington.

There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday at  Memorial Baptist Church.
