Quilt tradition continues at State Fair

From baked goods to quilts, there are a lot of West Virginia-made products to see at the State Fair of West Virginia! The display of needlework in the West Virginia building is always a favorite!

This year’s theme for quilts is “Best use of Purple”. Entrants found out about a couple of months before the fair that they would need to incorporate the color purple in their quilts. There are many categories you can enter based on how the quilt was made, either by hand or machine, as well as entries based on previous winners. The Needlework Superintendent, Sarah Feamster, said the unique designs are what fair goers really come to see.

“The emblems catch their eye. We have one called ‘The Great Outdoors’, and it has canoes on it, it has fish on it, it has pine cones. A lot of people have caught their eye on that one,” Feamster said.

There are more than 140 quilts entered this year, and about 100 entries for cross stitch, sewing and needle felting.
