As summer approaches, Southern West Virginia has a lot in store for people throughout our area.
There are many different attractions that bring people from other states into our community like white water rafting, zip lining and hiking.
Executive Director of the New River Gorge Visitor Center, Sharon Cruikshank says the influx of people in the Summer is always beneficial to the local economy.
“This generates our economy which needs a boost, and were so thankful tourism season is kicking off again and we’ve seen high numbers so far, it’s great and we’re excited for this year,” says Cruikshank.
West Virginia is a stopping point for many people who are passing through our area and to some businesses in Southern West Virginia, tourism is everything.
“We wouldn’t be in business that is our product, we are a tourism destination and we rely on tourism dollars,” says Heather Johnson the Owner of River Expeditions.
Donna Barson is from Florida and she says she enjoys stopping in the Mountain State because there are fun activities she can share with her family.
“I am up for anything that helps a community and brings people together, and makes it a better place to live,” says Barson.
According to the National Parks Service, last year tourism brought 64.1 million dollars into the economic and it also created 846 new jobs.
Mount Hope resident John Adkins says his family is from Michigan and visits him frequently in the summertime to enjoy white water rafting.
“I have a lot of people in Michigan and they come and stay at my house,” says Adkins.
With June approaching, white water rafting and many more activities are reaching their peak season.
As long as the sun is shinning, anyone can take advantage of these adventures.
