Crews from several departments in Virginia and Kentucky began September and the Labor Day weekend with a Drive to Save Lives traffic safety operation. Troopers in Virginia and Kentucky were joined by deputies from Wise and Letcher Counties. They set up the joint enforcement project on U.S. Route 23 at the Virginia/Kentucky state line.
The checkpoint lasted four hours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016. They issued 66 traffic ticks for speeding, seat belt violations and unsafe equipment. There were also four drivers arrested for driving under the influence.
