Two men arraigned in fatal Hinton arson case

Two men accused of setting a fatal fire appeared in court August 10, 2015. Ronald Smith and Mark Ward made their way to sit before a judge to be arraigned in the Summers County Courthouse in Hinton.

Smith and Ward were charged with two counts each of first degree murder, arson  and conspiracy after they allegedly set a home on fire and killed Mathew Cole and Dale Basham that were inside.

“I don’t know why they would even do something that awful to my son and Dale Basham,” Matt Cole’s mother said.

Matthew was in the house with his friend Dale Basham when went it went up in flames. This was the first day the Cole family was face to face with these men accused of killing their family member.

“It just makes you want to go over there and kill them,” Alicia Cole, Matt Cole’s Sister said.

Both men plead not guilty. The Judge Left Mark Ward’s bond at $250,000. His trial is set for October 27, 2015. Ronald Smith’s trial has not been set.

The Assistant Prosecuting attorney says she confident these men will not make bond.
