The search is on for two black men who deputies said are getting away with money by scamming clerks at stores in Tazewell, Mercer, and McDowell Counties. Deputies said the suspects went to Stop In in Tazewell County on Monday, July 13, 2015.
Tazewell County Sheriff Brian Hieatt said, “They’ve been going up to the cashiers and asking for change and giving a hundred dollars asking for change and then taking some of that change and asking for smaller change. They’re trying to confuse the cashiers so that by the time they’re done, they’ve left with more money they came in with.”
We are told the two suspects got away with $300 from Stop In. The manager said she is angry.
Ginger McCullen said, “I’m angry that they did that to her because she didn’t realize what was going on. People are losing their jobs because of this. You just would have not suspected them to do something like that to you. You’re not a bank. Don’t give them change.”
Deputies said some of the other stores the men tried to scam is the Subway in Brushfork and Wal-Mart in Pounding Mill. They also went to Happy Mart in Tazewell, and Corner Mart in Bluefield. The suspects face larceny charges. Deputies are still trying to identify the suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office.
