5:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, 2016 UPDATE:
Officers with the Charleston Police Department said that foul play is not suspected in the body found in the Kanawha River in Charleston on Monday. Detective Steve Cooper identified the body as being a male. He also said he was homeless and frequented a shelter in the area. Officers are awaiting autopsy results before they will release the person’s name.
ORIGINAL STORY: Emergence Dispatchers said that a body was found in Kanawha County on Monday, Dec. 12, 2016. According to officials, the body was located in the Kanawha River at Court Street and Kanawha Boulevard East in Charleston at approximately 10:50 a.m.
Dispatchers do not know how the body got there or how long the body has been in the water. There is no word on the identity of the person or if investigators believe there may have been a crime committed.
Charleston Police, Charleston Fire, and Charleston EMS are responding to the scene. We will update this story with more information as we receive it.
